Here are some tips for businessmen on how to get the best return on investment in their people:

§         If you can’t afford to get the best talents now hire the young who can be the best. Invest in developing young people with potential and train them to become your future leaders.

§         Understand your business and design your structure and systems in a way that people can move up in either the managerial or technical ladder and still get amply compensated. Pay not only for the position, but also for performance, potential and the person.

§         Gauge people’s potential and assign more challenging jobs to high-potential employees. Don’t train everybody the same way. Provide more training for people who will move up high in your organization. Train them to do their present jobs well and prepare them for the future jobs.

§         Use pay to communicate if you want to keep your people or not. Stop paying the same for similar positions. Differentiate and discriminate according to value contributed by your talents.

§         Stop giving annual salary increases to recognize great performance. Install an incentive plan where people can get substantial bonus if they contribute to making the organization profitable. This way, your payout is self-liquidating and cost-neutral. If you don’t make profits, you have no obligation to pay more, unless mandated by government.

§         Never tolerate mediocrity if you want a culture of excellence. As you recognize and honor excellent performance, punish poor performance or undesirable behavior, in accordance with procedures specified by law.

§         Respect individuality, encourage people to unleash their talents, and create an environment where people can be free to think, decide, or worry. Replace the fear with fun in the workplace.

§         Periodically give feedback to your people on their performance, and ask for their opinion on issues affecting them – leadership, communication, engagement, compensation, etc.

§         The market dictates what skills and competencies your people should have. The market needs do change over time. Continually sharpen your people’s skills by giving them challenging tasks so that they can be in top form and they can be in top form and they will be market – competitive always.

§         Have a variety of programs to attract, retain, motivate and engage your people in ways that make them add more value to your organization, as they increase their own market value.

Your organization is never too small to consider doing the above suggestions. Regardless of your size, you are not spared from the challenge of  the future – how to make your people provide the competitive advantage that you want to have.

Your lack of a degree should not end your career

Some job seekers harbor a secret that prevents them from applying for work they know they could do. Or they worry that if this fact comes to light in a job interview, it will explode and cause them to be led unceremoniously to the door.

These are the people who went to college but never got a degree.

People who have had “ some college” are far from rare. After six years, more than 40 percent of those who started at a four-year institution have not finished, according to data from the Education Department.

Some may have decided that college wasn’t right for them; some will take longer than six years to finish. But for many others, life intervenes, said Jacqueline E. King, assistant vice president for policy analysis at the American Council on Education, which represents degree-granting institutions. They may have decided to start a family, or had to care for a sick relative or took on more responsibility at work.

Then more life happens, and as the years go by, that piece of paper with the calligraphy, gold seal and signatures of bigwigs becomes ever more elusive.

Owning that paper may seem especially important when the unemployment rate is high. Many employers are now reflexively listing a bachelor’s degree as a requirement; it’s an easy way to help whittle down hundreds of applications into a manageable pile.

Don’t lie on your resume about having a bachelor’s degree, but if you spent some time at college, write down “ bachelor’s studies,” with the name of the institution you attended, said Katy Piotrowski, a career counselor based in Fort Collins, Colorado, and an author of career books. That could get you past the initial screening.

Still, if you respond to an online job posting that requires a bachelor’s degree  and you don’t have one, you are much more likely to end up in the “no” pile. That’s why it is especially important for those without degrees to rely on networking, Piotrowski said.
If, through your connections, you can convince someone to give you an interview, you can show how your skills, qualities and experience make you right for a job – and that whole degree business may well melt away.

Piotrowski said that hiring managers should realize that employees who don’t have degrees can be some of the hardest – working and most loyal, for the very reason that they feel themselves to be at a disadvantage in the job market.

Some people wear their lack of a degree as if it’s a scarlet letter, she said. Just about the first words out of their mouths at an interview are, “ I don’t have a B.A., but…” she said.
There’s no need to mention that you don’t have a degree unless you’re asked, Piotrowski said. And remember that everyone has blips in their past. “ Put in perspective this small piece of the total picture and don’t focus on it,” she said.

One of Piortrowski’s clients, Michele McCreath, 46, has more than two years of college but never got a degree, she said, having quit more than two decades ago to raise her two children. She started working again when her younger child was in third grade.

Without a degree, she obtained her current job as a marketing director at a telecommunications business. But the company has told her that she will be part of a coming layoff, she said, and she will need to find a new job.

“Companies that have looked past not having the degree, and have seen the experience, have always been really pleased with my work,” McCreath said. But in this economy, she knows that she has to pickup the phone and use her connections to find a way in the door. She is also working on completing professional certificates as a meeting planner and a trade show marketer.

At this stage in her life, McCreath said, earning such certificates is a realistic goal. She is open to the idea of finishing her degree, she said, but “it’s really hard to go to work full time and go to school full time and have a life.”

But for some people, getting a degree may be more feasible. For some suggestions on how to get started, you might look at the Center for Lifelong Learningon the Web site of the American Council on Education. Check with your former college, with schools in your area or with online universities to find out about programs for adult learners, King said.

More schools are reaching out to students who never finished degree requirements, creating flexible programs that can be particularly helpful to those who have just a few credits left, she said. If you are unemployed and unable to find new work,  this could be an excellent time to go back to school. Money may be an issue, of course. But financial aid is available for nontraditional students, she said.

If you have only a few credits to go, why let them dog you for the rest of your life? For some people, Piotrowski said, the hours spent worrying about not having a degree could be spent actually getting one.

Amid all the practical considerations, don’t forget that you might learn something, too. When people return to school later in life, King said, they are often pleasantly surprised at how much they actually enjoy the learning process.

What to do after interview mishaps

Job interviews can be nerve-wracking and a slipup or two is inevitable. You might think that a mistake might cost you a job, but it is not always the case. It is best to be aware of the most commonly committed mistakes, as the best way to avoid making them is to know about them beforehand.

You were nervous and couldn’t answer.

Preparing for the interview can help calm you down, because interviews are unfamiliar situations; ‘ practice interviews’ can make you feel more at ease with the situation. But if you’re there and you couldn’t answer, try politely asking the interviewer to clarify the question. Take a deep breath, then quickly analyze the question. Don’t try to make a list of answers; instead focus on one good idea you have then develop it.

You are late.

If you think that you are going to be late for 10 minutes at most, call your interviewer and tell them when you can make it. do not forget to apologize and give a valid reason (‘I woke up late’ does not count). If you are going to be more than ten minutes late, ask if they want you to keep heading for their office or id they want to push the interview to a later date. Even though your action may be perceived negatively, express that you know their time is valuable. Once you get there, give a proper apology, let the issue go down the drain, and never dwell on it because doing so will only make matters worse.

You kept saying, “ um, ah, like, ano…”

These filler words, along with long pauses, make you appear less articulate and unsure of yourself. Eliminating this take time and needs to be a cautious, steady effort. Situations like a job interview can make a person nervous, resulting in the use of verbal fillers. Pay close attention at the way you talk. Listen for your use of these fillers at all times and when you notice that you have been doing it for a while, simply slow down, get your verbal composure back, and try to focus on constructing your sentences better. Discipline yourself to pause even in the middle of sentences while you struggle to think of the next word you want to use.

You had out-of-date or incorrect information on your resume.

This often happens when an applicant revises his or her resume and fails to remove some of the out-dated (the wrong address, the number of the cell phone you lost), mistaken ( you misspelled your old company’s name or listed the wrong person as your superior) or irrelevant data (hobbies, likes/dislikes, etc.). Once the error is spotted by your interviewer, own it up to it and apologize. Complete transparency is the best solution. Give an explanation as to how and why it happened but make sure that you do not sound like you are only trying to make an excuse. Show that you have high integrity through your words despite the lapse.

You cursed or said the wrong thing.

First, stay calm. Do not draw more attention to it by crying or repeating the act; instead, apologize then take a deep breath and ask for a moment so you can clarify your statement.

You offended the interviewer.

Maybe it was the tone of your voice when you answered the question; maybe you expressed an opinion that the interviewer found offensive; maybe you interrupted the interviewer. Whatever it is, apologize immediately. If you don’t know how you offended your interviewer, offer an apology before you ask what you did wrong. Do not get angry as well; even if you don’t understand what you did wrong, it might be a situation to test how you handle unpleasant situations. Be contrite and express a desire to improve. But if you said something truly rude (like telling a female interviewer that you believe “women have no place in the workplace; only men should work”) then perhaps its best to excuse yourself, apologize, then ask permission to leave. HR personnel share stories with each other so it is important to express your sincere apologies and not to leave on a sour note.

If you condensed your most recent meal down to a few pills, would they be tiny dynamos, or the nutritional equivalent of Tic Tacs? If you're like most men, what's on your plate falls somewhere in between—that is, leaving plenty of room for improvement. "If men start to favor certain foods—meat and potatoes, for example—they may develop nutritional blind spots as a result," says Kristie Lancaster, Ph.D., an associate professor of nutrition at New York University.

This can be a problem, because your body needs a basic roster of vitamins and minerals to run properly. If your regular diet comes up short, you may need a multivitamin to reach this nutritional baseline. But to actually boost your health, you need to consider moving beyond a multi by folding in some less common elements. Lycopene, for instance, is a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes. Red yeast rice, a heart-healthy statin. Bottled boosters such as these can be insurance policies for your nutritional blind spots—and if you have specific health concerns, a form of extended coverage

The right supplements can help your heart, sharpen your immune system, and even improve your sex life. The wrong ones, however, can be ineffective or even harmful. "You run into problems because most men are 'prescribing' these things themselves," says Tod Cooperman, M.D., president of ConsumerLab.com, an independent tester of health and nutritional products. "Don't take supplements with abandon. They should be used carefully, because taking in too much of certain nutrients can cause problems."

We consulted with top doctors, reviewed the latest research, and waded through marketers' claims to bring you 16 of the best supplements for men. Use our guide—along with advice from your own doc, since many supplements can interact with other medications—to fine-tune your strategy.

Problem: Brain drain
Solution: ACETYL L-CARNITINE
This amino acid converts fats to energy and boosts antioxidant activity in the body. In supplement form, it may protect gray matter from stress caused by alcohol and aging. And in a 2006 study, people who received 1,000 milligrams (mg) of acetyl L-carnitine a day saw relief from mild chronic depression.
Dose: 1,000 mg/day*
Our pick: Vitamin World Acetyl L-Carnitine, 1,000 mg; vitaminworld. com ($50/60 capsules)
Natural sources: Red meat, dairy products

Try these 10 everyday tips to boost brainpower!

Problem: High blood pressure
Solution: COENZYME Q-10
CoQ-10 can lower your blood pressure while boosting your levels of ecSOD, an enzyme thought to protect blood vessels from damage. CoQ- 10 may also improve sperm quality, Italian researchers say. Japanese researchers found it can increase fat burning during exercise.
Dose: 30 to 200 mg/day*
Our pick: Carlson Co-Q10, 100 mg; carlsonlabs.com ($40/90 soft gels)
Natural sources: Meat and fish, eggs, broccoli

Do more for your ticker: 6 ways to beat high blood pressure.

Problem: Bone weakness
Solution: VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is a hormone that helps your bones absorb calcium. That's a critical benefit, but there's also a steady stream of other compelling reasons to take it, Dr. Cooperman says. For instance, Vitamin D has been linked to reduced levels of depression, reduced risk of colorectal cancer, and less chance of a heart attack.
Dose: 1,000 IU Vitamin D3/day
Our pick: GNC Vitamin D-3 1000; gnc.com ($10/180 tablets)
Natural sources: Sunshine, fortified milk

Problem: Heart disease
Solution: FISH OIL
Loaded with the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, fish oil can reduce triglycerides, boost HDL cholesterol, and lower blood pressure. But your heart isn't the only beneficiary: The healthy fats may also reduce inflammation and improve cognitive performance, and may lower your risk of colon and prostate cancers.
Dose: At least 500 mg DHA and 500 mg EPA daily
Our pick: Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega; nordicnaturals.com ($28/60 soft gels)
Natural sources: Salmon, tuna, or other fatty fish

Take extra precaution with these 7 heart-saving strategies.

Problem: Migraines
Solution: MAGNESIUM
A drop in magnesium can be a major headache. "Blood vessels in your brain constrict, and receptors in the feel-good chemical serotonin malfunction," says Alexander Mauskop, M.D., director of the New York Headache Center. Result: a migraine. The mineral also might help regulate blood pressure and could ward off stroke and diabetes.
Dose: 250 mg/day, plus the magnesium in your diet
Our pick: Life Extension Magnesium Citrate, 160 mg; lef.org ($9/100 capsules)
Natural sources: Leafy greens, whole grains, pumpkin seeds, coffee, nuts

Problem: Diabetes
Solution: PSYLLIUM HUSK
This fiber is more than a colon clearer. In a recent Finnish study, the addition of psyllium to meals reduced participants' blood sugar and insulin response. Paired with protein, it was also shown to suppress ghrelin, a hormone that makes you hungry. Psyllium is one of five soluble fibers approved by the FDA for lowering LDL cholesterol.
Dose: 20 to 35 g/day, divided and taken with at least 8 oz liquid
Our pick: GNC Natural Brand Colon Pure; gnc.com ($16/19 oz)
Natural sources: Some fortified cereal grains

Problem: Digestive upset
Solution: PROBIOTICS
Probiotics are healthy bacteria that crowd out the disease-causing bad bacteria in your gut. Some can reduce diarrhea caused by certain infections, antibiotics, chemotherapy, and irritable bowel syndrome, Dr. Cooperman notes. The encapsulated good guys may also boost your immune function.
Dose: 1 capsule (with at least 1 billion bacteria) a day
Our pick: GNC Natural Brand Acidophilus Probiotic Complex; gnc.com ($14/100 tablets)
Natural sources: Yogurt, kefir, and other dairy products

Problem: Low endurance
Solution: QUERCETIN
Want to extend your cardio session? People who didn't exercise regularly but took 500 mg of this antioxidant twice a day for a week were able to bicycle 13 percent longer than the placebo group, a University of South Carolina study found. It may help reduce the oxidation of LDL particles and reduce blood-vessel constriction.
Dose: Up to 500 mg, twice a day*
Our pick: Jarrow Formulas Quercetin 500; vitaminexpress. com ($16/100 capsules)
Natural sources: Red wine, parsley, grapefruit, onions, apples

Problem: Joint pain
Solution: GLUCOSAMINE
Glucosamine, a building block of cartilage, can relieve pain and inflammation in joints, says Nicholas DiNubile, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon. In fact, a recent study found glucosamine is more effective than acetaminophen (a.k.a. Tylenol) at relieving symptoms of knee osteoarthritis, often caused in younger men by joint injury.
Dose: 1,500 mg/day*
Our pick: Puritan's Pride Glucosamine 1,500 mg; puritan.com ($29/120 caplets)
Natural sources: Crustacean shells

Problem: Injury
Solution: VITAMIN C
Sixty percent of adult men don't get enough vitamin C in their diets, according to an American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study. Vitamin C helps protect your cells from the tissue-damaging free radicals produced by exercise. It also helps heal wounds, and it's key to production of the collagen found in ligaments and tendons.
Dose: Up to 1,000 mg/day in spaced doses
Our pick: Ester-C, 500 mg; cvs.com ($11/90 tablets)

Problem: Extra body fat
Solution: EGCG
Men who took green-tea extract burned 17 percent more fat after moderate exercise than those taking placebos, according to one study. EGCG, the most active antioxidant in green tea, is thought to prolong exercise-induced boosts in metabolism. It has also been shown to help prevent cancer and can improve heart health.
Dose: 890 mg/day green tea extract (containing 340 mg of EGCG)
Our pick: Green Tea EGCG-200; procapslabs.com ($15/30 capsules)
Natural sources: Green tea

Problem: Prostate-cancer risk
Solution: LYCOPENE

Dose: 600 to 1,600 mg/day, depending on the condition.*
Our pick: GNC SAM-e 400; gnc.com ($38/30 tablets)
Natural sources: Made in your body, possibly after eating meats, greens, and oranges

Problem: Enlarged prostate
Solution: SAW PALMETTO

Stressful day? Don't reach for a candy bar. Try one of these soothing liquids instead.

1. Drink a glass of milk. It contains tryptophan, which as it is metabolized is converted to mood-boosting serotonin. Plus, its calcium, magnesium and potassium content may help keep blood pressure down.

2. Drink hot cocoa. Warm drinks raise your body temperature—a feeling we associate with comfort, so it triggers a similar response in our brains.

3. Order black tea instead of coffee. A study by University College London shows that drinking black tea four times a day for six weeks lowered the stress hormone cortisol after a stressful event.

4. Drink green tea—packed with theanine, which increases the brain’s output of relaxation-inducing alpha waves and reduces the output of tension-making beta waves.

5. Drink a glass of cold water, then go for a walk outside. The water gets your blood moving and the air invigorates by stimulating the endorphins that de-stress you.

A few Sample Interview Killers

Sometimes the best way to learn  something is to see how  not to do it. Here are some  answers, so that   can analyze them for yourself:

 Typical Question

               Response

              Why It’s a Killer

“If the job is offered to you today, would you take it?”

“Oh yes, thank you so much, I really need this job!”

Too desperate. People who are desperate sound suspicious to interviewers.

“I’m not sure, I might have t think it over and see what other offers may come my way.”

The response is rude and presumptuous; who do you think you are? You’re not being cautious; you’re telling the interviewer that you are not the right person for the job.

“Um, haha, uh, ano, eh…”

You sound like you’re delaying the interview or you can’t make up your mind. Nobody wants someone who can’t decide for themselves.

“Do you think you’re qualified for the job?”

“Of course. Just look at my resume and experience. I’ll be an asset to this company.”

Too cocky. You’re not God’s gift to the company.

“Um, I don’t know. Maybe? Uh, you be the judge of that.”

Can sound like either a) false modesty or b) the inability to express yourself properly, both of which count against you.

“Tell me about yourself.”

“My name is Juan de la Cruz, I’m 23 years old and I finished Computer Science at AMA.”

This is information contained in your resume. You need to create a good impression on the interviewer, so say something memorable which will prove you’re worth hiring.

“I love kittens and puppies I like to play basketball, I’m a fan of Brad Pitt, and I so love the color pink, which is why I’m wearing it today!”

The interviewer does not need to know everything about you, only what you have that will make you worthy of hiring.

“Why are you leaving your current job?”

“I’m stifled by the work environment- the aircon is too weak, my boss is stupid, and I am not doing important work.”

Why should they hire a whiner like you? Even if your previous boss was a jerk, don’t say so!

“I’m not sure.”

You need to give a good reason; otherwise they will think you’re just jumping around jobs for fun.

“How do you see yourself five years from now?”

“In a year I’ll be the best writer n my department, then in three years I’ll be the editor of the section, then in five years I want to be the EIC of the magazine!”

Not only it is naive and presumptuous, it shows that you do not care for the dynamics of promotions and office relationships.

“Still with this company.”

“ It’s like declaring you have no ambitions and are content to be just “OK” when companies are looking for excellent people.”

“What do you consider your biggest weakness?”

“I’m shy.”

It sounds like you don’t want to answer the question and neither do you want to give an answer that makes you look bad.

Choose your stockbroker with the same care that you would choose other professionals- for example a vet for your precious Shitzu. Your stockbroker should be someone who will listen attentively as you explain your financial needs and who can be trusted to carry out your wishes.

Easy to talk to

You should feel comfortable with your stockbroker. The more he or she knows about your financial situation and goals, the better your account will be served.

No pressures

You need to keep in mind that your investments must please you, not just your stockbroker. A good broker-dealer will take the time to find the investment strategy that is best for you and wont put you into a certain investment just because it’s the hottest item of the week.

Pays attention and acts on what you say

If you tell a stockbroker that you don’t want a certain degree of risk or a certain type of investment, then he or she won’t be constantly recommending that investment to you. On the other hand, a good stockbroker will try to find out why you don’t want a particular investment.

Explains things until you understand

The securities business is very complicated and can be difficult to understand, especially if things aren’t explained properly. A good stockbroker will provide you with information and will take as much time as necessary to explain a proposed transaction until you understand. Remember that this is your investment-you have every right to understand exactly what is going to happen with it.

And after you’ve chosen your stockbroker, remember these things:

What do you need?

Determine how much and what type of service you want from your brokerage firm and stockbroker. A full-service firm will offer investment advice, make recommendations and offer research support.

Research your brokerage firm and stockbroker

Ask for and check references from several clients. Don’t make a decision based solely on a telephone solicitation, advertisement or seminar. Also, your stockbroker should have a license from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ask about fees and commissions

Most stockbrokers earn commissions when they buy and sell investments on behalf of their clients. Make sure you understand these costs before opening an account. Many brokerage firms charge ongoing fees related to the maintenance of your account. Try to understand these fees and how they are charged to your account.

Determine your investment needs and objectives (short-term profits, long-term growth, steady income, etc.)

Make your goals clear to your stockbroker, preferably in writing. If your investment goals change, be sure that your stockbroker’s records and your records accurately reflect your revised objectives.

Establish your tolerance for risk

Specify the level of risk you are willing to take to achieve your financial objectives. Remember a basic investment rule: the higher the possible rate of return, the greater the risk. If you are promised spectacular returns, be skeptical and ask questions.

Make sure you can understand account statements and confirmation slips

Understanding your account statements and confirmation slips is key to controlling your investments. Check the statements over carefully as soon as you receive them. Familiarize yourself with the format, terms and codes used by your brokerage firm. If you ever find information in your account statement or confirmation slip that you do not understand, contact your stockbroker immediately and get a satisfactory explanation.

If you have P 50000 cash,
What will you do with it?
Will you spend it or save it?
Once you’ve attained a positive cash flow, what ca you do to maximize your financial position?

BEFORE YOU START SAVING, YOU MUST FIRST distinguish between what you want and what you need. Needs are pretty simple to identify: shelter, food, clothing and transportation. Wants are those things that enhance or possibly improve our life.

There are ways you can cut back and increase cash on regular basis without resorting to extreme measures. Below are some tips for areas in which you can save. Once you start implementing these tips and become more familiar with the money saving opportunities you have, take the time to review your progress. Check and see where it may possible to revise some of your techniques or where you can implement new ones. The more frequent you review your savings ideas, the more “in tune” you’ll be with your finances and spending habits, and learn what works and what doesn’t for you.

  1. Pay yourself weekly
This may seem a bit odd, but this is an excellent way to start buildings a substantial savings. On a weekly basis, pay yourself P 1,500 and 2,000 and immediately put it in a safe place. You can even open a special savings account where this weekly “payday” can be placed to help minimize or eliminate impulsive spending. Think about it this way: if you pay yourself P 1,500 a week, in one yea you’ll have accumulated P72,000!

  1. Track your spending
Take the time to track your spending habits for one week. Take note of every single P50 or P100 you spend, even those sodas, beers, Internet and phone cards, and candy bars purchased here and there. This will give you a “birds-eye” view of exactly where your money is being spent, thus allowing you to refine your spending habits to essentially save more money.

  1. Don’t shop
For those of you that love to shop, you may find that this is one tip that could save you thousands of pesos in a month. Start using the “Need or Want” strategy. Before you spend P500 on anything, ask yourself, “Do I really need this item, or do I just want it?” you may find that many of the items we purchase, we do so just because it “caught our eye” or it was “an impulse buy” or “my friend bought the same thing”. All these excuses just add up to wasteful spending.

  1. Food and convenience stores
You can save more cash by shopping at lower-priced food stores. Convenience stores often charge the highest price. If you shop with a list, you will spend less, take advantage of sales, and purchase basic ingredients, rather than pre-packaged components or ready-made items. Stock-up on items with low per unit costs. And when you shop, try to plan in advance. By knowing what you need, you will be able to buy in larger quantities ( almost always less expensive) and cut down on convenience food purchases 9always more expensive).

  1. Clothing
With some planning it is possible to maintain clothing purchases that are I line with your budget. For example, buy separates that coordinate. You can make numerous combinations with a few well-matched items. For women, jackets, slacks, skirts and blouses can be mixed and matched to create many different outfits. Plus you can change the look of these outfits with accessories such as jewelry or scarves. Men’s  clothing offers a wide variety of separates that can be coordinated: blazers, lacks, shirts and ties can all be interchanged to create a versatile wardrobe with a minimum of expense.

  1. Use your bank’s own ATMs
Some banks will charge you money for using other ATM machines. Even though you will be able to withdraw money using your ATM/debit card from literally any machine, banks will charge you P8 to P12 for using a machine other than theirs, in addition to a standard charges for its use. Try and stick with your own bank’s ATMs whenever possible.

  1. Avoid getting too many credit cards
Why have three or five credits? That’s just going to provide you with more opportunities to go further into debt. Its fine to keep one or two cards to build credit, establish yourself,  and for emergencies. But, credit cards are double-edged swords. They can help or hurt you depending on your self-control.

  1. Use your debit card instead of credit cards
Get in the habit of using your debit card instead of your credits cards. For the most part, debit cards are accepted anywhere a credit card is accepted, however as you know, with a debit card the amount is taken directly from your checking or savings account whereas credit card usage is billed at a later date (along with a hefty interest rate).

  1. Lower credit card balances
This is another very important tip that many often overlook. Pay off those pesky credit cards as soon as possible before the interest charges eat more of your cash. What a waste of your hard earned money! Keep chopping away at the balances until you get to an amount that is reasonable.

  1. Don’t delay, pay your bills
To avoid late payment fees and possible interest rate increases on your credit cards, make sure you send in your payment a week to ten days before the statement due date. Late payments on one card can increase fees and interest rates on other cards. As for your other bills, you can avoid interest charges, which may be considerable, by paying your bills on time each month. If you are unable to pay off a large balance, pay as much as you can.
